When I talk about my motivations for creating the art I do, I always say that the goal is to make people feel seen, to tell stories that resonate so deeply with other people that they illuminate something inside. This is the kind of art that has always excited me, made me feel understood, and inspired me to create the same for others. Watching "All Shall Be Well" I walked into the theater last Monday intrigued by just the synopsis of All Shall Be Well. a film about Angie and Pat, a 60-something lesbian couple in Hong Kong who create memories for a lifetime with the support of friends and family. The plot takes a sharp turn when Pat unexpectedly dies, leaving Angie legally and financially vulnerable, especially where their union is not recognized. I was skeptical at first, tired of stories where lesbian characters meet tragic ends. But the film’s deep dive into the complexities of unrecognized same-sex unions, combined with the raw realities of aging and loss, quickly drew me in. This film delves into why the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is far from over. . Sometimes I forget that while living in my carefully constructed bubble. For a moment I might think, “It’s not that bad, is it?” But then reality hits, and this film brings that house down. It shows how hard things still are for a lot of queer people, and my heart still breaks for Angie. It’s a stark reminder that so many LGBTQ+ people are still dealing with this reality, and likely will for a long time to come. There’s also something about the way the film captures family dynamics that reminds me a lot of How to Make a Million Before Grandma Dies. The focus on family and relationships felt really authentic, and added another layer to why this film felt so real and moving. This cultural lens was so effective that I compared the film to The Happiest Season. in 2020 lesbian romance. Despite their different genres and themes, both films focus on a lesbian couple with family as a major part, illustrating the different dynamics of Asian families compared to their Western counterparts. It’s a heartbreaking but necessary watch.
